Culture in Narrative

We define culture as a collectively formed and shared conceptual understanding of oneself, the world, and one's place in the world. Culture is transmitted across generations and internalized as a set of perspectives, dispositions, and motivations that underlie human actions (Williams, 1995). Culture affects our perception of ourselves, our world, our place in that world, and what we do as part of that world. These perceptions motivate behavior, which enforces and reinforces our "culture."In this way, culturally based psychological activities are formed as individuals engage in practical social activities, sometimes referred to as cultural practices . Our position is that culture operates implicitly in individuals through a system of meanings and reini. Implicit culture is the embodied knowledge that organizes how individuals perceive, respond, and behave in the social world.
